The Illustration program of The New School cultivates your vision, authorial voice, creative problem-solving abilities, and curiosity while translating ideas into forms including picture books, graphic novels, hand lettering, editorial and advertising illustrations, toy designs, animations, and surface and display design.

Overview

During the Illustration program of The New School students create work for reproduction and distribution, developing your visual storytelling skills through representational drawing and painting coupled with text, design of three-dimensional objects, and animation across time. Art and design history and theory courses complement studio courses, giving you the research, writing, and reasoning skills you need to effectively develop and share your ideas and concepts. And university electives broaden your skills and perspectives with a wide range of liberal arts courses in the humanities, the social sciences, media studies, and business.

Future Opportunities

Graduates pursue careers in illustration, comics, graphic novels, publishing, toy and product design, pattern and surface design, advertising, motion graphics, fine art, animation, and installation design.
