During the Anthropology program of The New School students will combine multiple disciplines to explore a wide range of human-centered topics such as race and classification, money and value, human rights, migration, violence, drug cultures, digital worlds, science and technology, kinship and gender, art, design, and urban life.

Anthropology majors acquire a comprehensive knowledge of anthropology and its key concepts, methods, new approaches, and critical texts through three modes of inquiry:

  • Reading Anthropology introduces anthropological texts and the distinctive ways in which cultural anthropologists study the world.
  • Writing Anthropology focuses on modes of anthropological writing and other forms of representation - including photography, film, and sound recordings - and the relationship of anthropology to other disciplines.
  • Doing Anthropology emphasizes the analysis and practice of fieldwork and other methods anthropologists employ in their research.

Our interdisciplinary approach also promotes dialogue with other fields such as history, economics, environmental studies, psychology, urban studies, philosophy, and media studies.
