Overview

As the most fundamental of the sciences, physics encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles and has applications in areas ranging from astronomy to medicine. At its core, physics consists of the basic principles and study of how everything works. From quarks to electricity to black-holes, physics is all around us.

What You Will Learn

Majors in the Physics program of Ball State University gain knowledge in theory and learn to solve practical problems. Early involvement in research—where you’ll work closely with faculty members—prepares you for challenging careers as technical problem solvers.

Physics majors may work in challenging, problem-solving positions, such as:

  • Engineering positions, including product development involving computer hardware and software
  • environmental or industrial management
  • research and technical positions
  • education as middle school or high school teachers

What Can You Do with a Degree in Physics?

Physics study provides a good base of knowledge and skills for a wide variety of career opportunities. There are many “hidden physicists” who work in exciting jobs

such as video game designer, fashion technologist, fighter pilot, and more. Many of our students continue to graduate school for physics, astronomy, and related fields. Many have successful careers as research scientists.

They choose to further their physics education to pursue careers in:

  • research
  • higher education
  • medical physics
  • atmospheric science
  • medicine
  • engineering disciplines

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Admission criteria include the strength of your high school curriculum and your performance, curricular patterns, and if your grade trends in academic courses were positive and consistent.
  • No grade point average guarantees admission to Ball State. We look for applicants that have demonstrated above average grades.
  • SAT/ACT scores are not required for admission but scores may be used to meet our English proficiency requirement.
  • Complete the online application for undergraduate admission.
  • You must provide high school transcripts and diplomas from all institutions where you have studied in the past. They must be submitted in English or with an official translation.
