Overview

The Art Education program of Ball State University prepares students for the challenges of today’s art classroom. Students earn an Indiana K-12 teaching license in art while learning the discipline-based method of art education.

As part of this method, you’ll develop your content fluency within an academically rigorous course of study that emphasizes the art disciplines of studio, criticism, art history, and aesthetics. Simultaneously, you’ll hone your teaching skills through courses dedicated to art-specific and general instructional methods, which are applied in classrooms in the local elementary, middle, and high schools.

Art education majors enjoy new classrooms, small class sizes, and their own resource library and computer lab. Students gain teaching experience at our Saturday Children's Art Classes.

What You Will Learn as an Art Education Major

You’ll work directly with public school students as part of your fieldwork and gain real-world experience, which increases your marketability post-graduation. As a unique part of the program, you’ll teach Saturday Children’s Art Classes, for which you’ll plan, budget, and teach your own curriculum to community children.

Art education students earn a K-12 teaching certificate (license) in visual arts for the state of Indiana, allowing you to work at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Many states – including Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky – honor this certification.

Admission to Ball State is competitive. We review each individual application to consider your academic performance, level of course work, and English proficiency test scores

Admission criteria include the strength of your high school curriculum and your performance, curricular patterns, and if your grade trends in academic courses were positive and consistent

SAT/ACT scores are not required for admission but scores may be used to meet our English proficiency requirement

You must pay a nonrefundable application fee of U.S. $60

You must provide high school transcripts and diplomas from all institutions where you have studied in the past. They must be submitted in English or with an official translation
