Overview

The Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies Program at Old Dominion University is housed within the Human Movement Sciences Department, one of five departments in the Darden College of Education. The PRTS Program is designed to prepare students with the skill, knowledge, and ability to pursue a professional career in the recreation and tourism industry. Each student major receives a management-based core curriculum complemented by their choice of a selected career emphasis area: (a) therapeutic recreation, (b) tourism management, and (c) park and recreation management.

Learning outcomes

The department name was changed to Human Movement Sciences (HMS) in 2010. Our most recent change occurred in 2012 when the program's name was changed to its current form of Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies (PRTS) to reflect current trends and practices within the field, and we added an additional emphasis area, bringing our emphasis areas to three: (1) Therapeutic Recreation, (2) Tourism Management, and (3) Park and Recreation Management.

PRTS has been continuously accredited since 1984, celebrating 30 years of accreditation.
