Overview

Students of English become adept critics of poetry, novels, essays, and plays. They develop knowledge of the history of literary culture and about the evolving genres, forms, and ideologies of literary expression. They study the relation of literary texts to their historical contexts, and they learn to read both literary and non-literary texts critically. As they develop their knowledge, students of English hone their skills as critical writers and explore their potential as creative voices.The study of literature fosters critical thinking about the relationships among literature, culture and history.

General Requirements

  • Completed Common Application, including Wesleyan’s member-specific questions
  • Secondary School Report and official high school transcript(s)
  • Counselor Recommendation
  • Mid-year Grade Report
  • Two Teacher Evaluations—applicants are encouraged to submit one teacher recommendation from a humanities and social science teacher and one from a math or science teacher
  • $55 Application Fee (non-refundable) or Fee Waiver
  • Interviews – Not required, but highly recommended as they allow exchange of information between student and University.
  • Supplemental Materials – Pieces of work that are relevant for the music, theatre or visual arts programs shall be submitted only when applying for such bachelors or masters degrees.
