Overview

More specialized upper-level courses primarily serve minors and majors. In addition to department Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies courses, University of Massachusetts Boston also offer an array of approved courses taught in other departments and programs (Art, English, Philosophy, Sociology, etc.). Many Women’s and Gender Studies courses fulfill general education requirements.

Diversity in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Curriculum

Throughout Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies courses, we incorporate the history and perspectives of women of different cultures, races, social classes, and sexualities. Students majoring or minoring in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies must take at least one designated multicultural awareness course. Many of our courses satisfy the separate Diversity Requirement of the College of Liberal Arts as well.

Faculty teaching in the program value all of our students and we encourage both students and faculty to be critical of social stereotyping of any kind.

In this program, you will:

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the historical, social, cultural, and political factors that shape the experiences and perspectives of women, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills
Explore the complexities of gender, sexuality, race, class, and other intersecting identities, gaining a nuanced understanding of power dynamics, inequalities, and social justice issues
Cultivate effective communication, advocacy, and leadership skills, empowering you to engage in social activism, community organizing, and policy-making to advance gender equity and social change

Career Possibilities

Work with organizations or government agencies to promote inclusivity, gender equity, and diversity through policy development. Manage and coordinate programs and initiatives focused on women's empowerment in the nonprofit sector. Or, report on gender-related issues, women's rights movements, and social justice topics for media outlets, magazines, or online platforms. These are just a few of the possibilities.
