Students in this program take elective courses focusing on key marine fauna, biological aspects of the coastal plains, estuaries, and barrier islands of Mississippi. These learning experiences are enhanced by field studies that stress practical experience with laboratory techniques.

What Will I Learn?

The Marine Biology curriculum at the University of Southern Mississippi emphasizes a foundation in biological sciences, physical sciences (chemistry, physics) the first two years. After the foundational Marine Biology course, students select from electives including 10 hours of field intensive courses taken at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs. Other electives are tailored to fit specific career goals (e.g., conservation biology, biological oceanography). Laboratories are designed to train students with skills to be more competitive in the job market, or prepare them for post graduate studies.
