Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree at Mississippi State University is a professional studio degree. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is earned after successful completion of an intensive, four-year program that provides the student with a series of in-depth studio experiences leading to a thesis/senior presentation balanced by studies in humanities, communication, mathematics, and sciences.

The B.F.A. degree may also serve as a preparation for graduate studies-usually the Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art or design.

Mission

The Department of Art's primary undergraduate responsibilities include educating professional artists with emphases in ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture; preparing students for a career or advanced study; offering courses that fulfill university requirements; and providing an active art gallery to serve the University, the community, and region.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Certified, translated copies of all transcripts, mark sheets, and diplomas, in a sealed, stamped envelope from your school.
  • An official ACT score of 20 or higher, official OLD SAT score of 960 or higher, or NEW SAT score of 1030 (only if your GPA is below 3.0 based on our evaluation of your transcripts OR if you are applying for scholarships).
