Program Overview

B.S.Ed. in Special Education - Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs at Ohio University's students should also use the four-year plan on the program website and/or consult with their advisor about scheduling as early as possible. Moderate to Intensive majors must also complete a minor area of concentration and after the completion of reading courses, take the reading PRAXIS (or OAE) for HQT status upon graduation. All licensure programs are subject to any changes in requirements as set forth by the Ohio Educator Licensure Board.

Freshman/First-Year Admission

As with all majors in Education, candidates must meet the requirements for Teacher Candidacy. In addition, those wishing to enter Special Education programs must also submit an application for admission in Special Education during Fall semester of the sophomore year and be accepted and eligible (meet all requisites) for entry into their junior year Special Education Block 2 courses.

The admission process for Special Education includes application for admission to Teacher Candidacy, review of your academic record, (minimum GPA 3.0) and dispositions, and your professional statement. Admission applications are available on the Web and should be submitted online. The application deadline is posted on the e-News and is typically one month prior to priority registration week.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Upon successful completion of the Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs program at Ohio University and passing scores on the state licensing exams, individuals are eligible to hold K-12 public school teaching positions as an intervention specialist. Further, many individuals are qualified to work in agencies serving families, young children and those who provide services to adults with disabilities.

GCSE or IGCSE Curricula

For students participating in the GCSE or IGCSE curricula, they generally expect to see at least 6 passes, graded C or higher. Students who are going on to complete GCE Advanced Subsidiary (AS-levels) and/or Advanced Levels (A-levels) may be awarded transfer credit for successfully completed exams.

International Baccalaureate Curriculum

For students studying an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, they generally expect an average of 5 out of 7 on your college-preparatory curriculum. IB Higher Level examinations may also be eligible for transfer credit.
