The Music program at the Smith College offers performance courses in voice and a wide variety of instruments, and members of the department direct a wide variety of performance ensembles. The department boasts extraordinary practice facilities and a remarkable number of notable graduates who have led distinguished musical careers in performance, scholarship and the practical world of music.


Sage Hall

Sage Hall is home to the Department of Music. It houses abundant resources for music students and faculty, including an oustanding concert hall, an intimate recital hall, a digital classroom with electronic pianos, a well-equipped electroacoustic studio, an early-music room and numerous practice rooms with grand pianos.

Sweeney Concert Hall

Sweeney Concert Hall is one of the most sought–after concert halls in the northeast. This beautiful performance space seats more than 600, and its broad stage can readily accommodate the needs of a diverse range of performances, from solo recitals to large choral and orchestral ensembles. Sweeney's excellent acoustics are suitable for both vocal and instrumental performances. For information about reserving this space, please contact the department office staff.

General Requirements

  • Performance lessons are for credit and require an audition. Why have auditions? They allow us to meet and listen to you! Think of them as placement hearings. The primary concern of all faculty is that you are ready to do college-level work, understanding that it requires a good basic level and commitment on your part. Because our classes have limited space we do not currently offer beginning instrumental lessons. Prior study is not required for students of voice.
  • Soon after arriving on campus students should sign up for an audition time slot. Audition sign-up sheets will be at the MDIWH and thereafter posted outside the music office in Sage Hall (the music building)
