 University of Oklahoma  School of Visual Arts Academic Programs

The OU School of Visual Arts offers numerous professional and comprehensive studio arts and art history programs. Each program is specifically designed to educate those students choosing a career in art. The faculty is comprised of teaching artists and art historians, whose knowledge, leadership, and skills create a classroom environment that is both productively rewarding and personally challenging.

Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs provide students interested in pursuing careers in art the only comprehensive BFA and MFA studio arts program in the state. Students choosing art history as a professional field may select from The Bachelor of Arts or the Master of Arts in Art History at the graduate level.

For all degree programs, a core curriculum of general education courses, combined with specific University academic requirements and electives, are complemented with specific studio art and art history requirements and electives. As each study program for the BFA, BA, MFA or MA degree is appropriately designed to meet specific requirements of its professional art field, the School of Art assigns an academic advisor to work with each student in the program.

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Submit either the OU Application, Common Application, or Coalition Application. This includes a $40, non-refundable application fee for domestic applicants.
  • Official high school transcript that reflects at least six semesters of work completed and includes your GPA computed on an unweighted 4.0 scale and your class rank
  • Official test scores to us through ACT and/or The College Board. Your test scores may also be included on your official high school transcript
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Official copies of any AP or CLEP test scores
