The integration of our academic programs with The Clarence Brown enables us to compete among the finest University theatre programs in the nation. Our MFA programs recruit nationally among the most elite professional programs, and our BA program is a leader in the region, offering a strong liberal arts degree with exceptional performance, design, and other production opportunities.
The Clarence Brown Theatre is a pillar of the east Tennessee arts community. Many of our shows sell out, and 35,000-40,000 people attend CBT shows each year. We enjoy the strong support of University leadership. The Clarence and Marian Brown Endowment, the state of Tennessee, and generous support from our community provide us with a stable financial foundation, and we are developing new resources to better our facilities, creative excellence, and national reach. General requirements

There is no audition requirement or portfolio review for acceptance into the BA in Theatre program at UT. The only requirement is acceptance into the University. Once you are accepted, you can declare as a theatre major or minor according to your academic plan. We encourage you to declare your theatre major as soon as possible, to allow you to take full advantage of the Theatre curriculum, and for a strong course of study overall during your time at UT.

There are no progression requirements prior to declaration, but there are two prerequisite courses, Theatre 100 – Introduction to Theatre, and your choice of ENGL 206 Introduction to Shakespeare, ENGL 248 Honors: Introduction to Drama, or ENGL 252 Introduction to Drama, without which the major cannot be fulfilled. Once you declare a Major in Theatre you will be assigned an academic advisor who is a member of the Theatre Department.
