Beginning with the first course taken in the Professional Education curriculum, students complete at least 100 hours tutoring and observing in local elementary schools and at the Institute of Child Development, located on the OU Norman campus, before they begin student teaching.Early Childhood Education programme is offered at the University of Oklahoma .The curriculum for a Bachelor of Science degree with teaching certification is designed to be accomplished within four years, though this can vary depending on when the student enters the program as a fully admitted student to the college.

An Early Childhood Education student graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. A student could also pursue a Master of Education, a Doctor of Philosophy or a Doctor of Education degree. Students who obtain a master's degree may be certified as reading specialists.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • An interview is required for admission into the teacher education programs in this department.  Interviews for summer and fall admissions are held in April and August.  Interviews for spring admission are held in November and January.  Interviews for summer are held in April. 
  • Submit either the OU Application, Common Application, or Coalition Application. This includes a $40, non-refundable application fee for domestic applicants.
