Overview

Majors in the Political Science program at University of Nevada, Reno will learn how governments interact with individuals or other governments and examine the results of those interactions. Students choose courses from five areas of study: American government and politics, comparative government and politics, political theory, international relations, and public administration and public policy. As they progress through the major, they develop writing and critical thinking skills, as well as a better understanding of the world around them.

Careers with a degree in political science

Political science majors have gone on to careers in all levels of government, including working for the governor or U.S. senators and even running for office themselves. After graduation, students also may go into teaching, work for a multinational corporation or attend graduate or law school.

The internship programs enable students to apply coursework to real-life experience. Political science and international affairs internships offer students the opportunity to explore potential careers in the field, network, apply coursework, build their résumé and receive academic credit. Internship opportunities are available at the local, state, national and international levels in various public, non-profit and private organizations.

General requirements

To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:

Required high school courses: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses (AGPA) in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

Standardized test scores are not required for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno. The University accepts the ACT and SAT scores and may use scores for class placement in first-year courses.
If you are a student who does not meet the academic GPA requirements, but have graduated with an Advanced Diploma from a Nevada high school, you will be granted admission to the University.
