What will I learn in a physics degree program?

Physics is the study of all fundamental forces and processes, from the subatomic to the astronomic. The study of physics underlies all of science, and encompasses topics such as energy, astrophysics, lasers, nanotechnology and more.

The Physics program at University of Nevada, Reno provides a foundation in basic science. Studying physics provides all students with an understanding of basic scientific concepts as well as the development of problem-solving skills that can be applied to problems in the sciences and beyond.

Physics majors also take advanced electives in specialized topics in the field, including computational techniques, nuclear physics, theory of relativity and more, based on your areas of interest.

Careers with a degree in physics

In addition to a solid foundation in the sciences, a physics degree provides invaluable experience in creative problem solving, giving graduates of the physics major versatile skills that can be applied in a range of industries.

Although many careers in physics require a graduate degree, according to the American Physical Society, nearly 50 percent of physics majors go directly into the workforce after graduation.

Job opportunities with a bachelor's degree in physics include high school teaching, working in a government lab or taking a position in private industry.

If you choose to work in private industry, you may be part of team working on research. Private companies often value broad experience, including computing skills and data analysis. If you seek employment in a government lab, you may be part of team that tests prototypes or products or helps with computer simulations. In both settings, prior internship or research experience can be a valuable way to gain practical experience to complement your physics degree.

General requirements

To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:

Required high school courses: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses (AGPA) in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

Standardized test scores are not required for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno. The University accepts the ACT and SAT scores and may use scores for class placement in first-year courses.
If you are a student who does not meet the academic GPA requirements, but have graduated with an Advanced Diploma from a Nevada high school, you will be granted admission to the University.
