Overview

Students in the Hydrogeology program at University of Nevada, Reno develop basic skills in math, chemistry, and physics, as well as in geology and geological engineering. Students will leave the program with a sound foundation in physical, chemical, geological and quantitative sciences as a basis for understanding the hydrologic cycle and managing water resources.

In addition to your technical knowledge in hydrogeology and underlying sciences, students in this degree program also develop the skills to read, analyze and communicate scientific knowledge. Professionals with expertise in water issues can be found working in government, private industry, public utilities and educational institutions, so the ability to share technical knowledge with a broader public can be a key skill in this industry.

Hydrogeology majors are also eligible to enroll in the accelerated B.S./M.S. program in hydrogeology. With careful planning, this allows students to earn a B.S. and M.S. in hydrogeology after five years of study.

Careers with a degree in hydrogeology

Hydrologists and hydrogeologists use their scientific expertise to address issues of water quality, supply and storage. As experts in the water cycle, hydrologists and hydrogeologists can use data and computer modeling to better understand environmental impacts on the water supply and can work with policy makers to develop water conservation plans, evaluate water-related industrial or utility projects, and monitor the impact of people or climate change on the water supply.

Many hydrologists and hydrogeologists work in government at every level, from local to the state and federal level, while others are employed in consuling and engineering firms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects as fast as average job growth for hydrologists in the decade from 2020 to 2030, as the importance of managing water resources grows.

To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:

Required high school courses: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses (AGPA) in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.

Standardized test scores are not required for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno. The University accepts the ACT and SAT scores and may use scores for class placement in first-year courses.
If you are a student who does not meet the academic GPA requirements, but have graduated with an Advanced Diploma from a Nevada high school, you will be granted admission to the University.
