What will I learn in a chemical engineering degree program?
The Chemical Engineering program at University of Nevada, Reno teaches students to use chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics to solve problems related to the production and manufacture of goods and materials.
In addition to a strong foundation in the sciences, students gain problem-solving and analytical skills through laboratory sections and the ability to collaborate with faculty on research projects. Graduates of our program have the necessary skills to work in industry or government or to pursue graduate training. Students in the bachelor's degree program also have the option to pursue an emphasis in biomedical engineering.
Successful engineering students arrive at the University with a strong background in math and science. We recommend students have taken physics and chemistry in high school and are prepared to take calculus as freshmen.
The bachelor's degree program prepares students to enter chemical engineering positions in industry, government or academia and to excel in those positions. Many chemical engineers go on to work in the energy industry, but opportunities exist in fields as diverse as biotechnology, electronics, mining and business.
Additionally, chemical engineers enjoy strong employment and earning prospects. According to a 2022 report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, chemical engineering majors had median starting salaries of $70,099.

General requirements
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:
- Required high school courses: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.
- You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses (AGPA) in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences.
- Standardized test scores are not required for admission to the University of Nevada, Reno. The University accepts the ACT and SAT scores and may use scores for class placement in first-year courses.
- If you are a student who does not meet the academic GPA requirements, but have graduated with an Advanced Diploma from a Nevada high school, you will be granted admission to the University.
