Topics of gender and sexual identity are at the forefront of today’s social and political discussions and issues—such as controversy surrounding gender-neutral public bathrooms or funding for Planned Parenthood—making this field an exciting, relevant area of study. The Gender Studies program at the University of Utah consists of courses in the following areas: introductory, protests and movement, feminist theories, and disciplinary seminars. Students then choose an additional three gender studies electives, with topics ranging from the psychology of love and gender to a history of American sexuality.

The Student Experience

If you want a more in-depth focus on a particular topic of interest, considering completing an undergraduate research project. Students seeking involvement opportunities can join the Gender Studies Student Advisory Committee or Students for Queer Art, Resistance, and Education. Additional enrichment opportunities include internships or study abroad programs.

Career Opportunities

Gender Studies students can pursue careers in a number of fields, including advocacy, social services, community development, business, and government. Become a policy maker, lobbyist, social worker, mental health case manager, training or human resources specialist, or educator. If you decide to attend graduate school, programs and subsequent careers in gender studies, counseling, psychology, law, and medicine are also possible.
