Key features

As a Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) student at the University of Utah, you will gain the knowledge and technical skills you need to work in a modern diagnostic medical laboratory. Accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the MLS curriculum consists of courses in clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunololgy, immunohematology, and hematology. These concepts are further ingrained through clinical experience rotations in medical laboratories in the area. MLS majors may choose to focus their studies in cytotechnology, or the cellular study of cancer. Regardless of focus area, students will learn to collect, process, and analyze biological specimens, perform lab procedures, maintain instruments, and interpret lab findings. Graduates of this exciting program are then prepared for a number of careers in science and medicine, able to make a difference in the lives of others.

The Student Experience

MLS students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) national certification examination upon graduation. In addition to their studies, students can network and meet MLS peers by joining the Medical Laboratory Science Professional Club (MLSPC).

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program are equipped to pursue careers in a number of areas. Enter the field of clinical analysis, specializing in chemistry, drug testing, or molecular diagnostics, or work in industry as a pharmaceuticals sales representative or research and development specialist. Students may also find work in public health, as crime lab or forensics employees or epidemiologists. With additional education at the graduate level, students can become university professors, administrators, or researchers, making groundbreaking discoveries in their field.
