Overview
Your teachers will include experienced dance artists and educators, and you’ll meet and study with performers and choreographers from across the country and around the world. You’ll train in modern and contemporary dance forms and you’ll take creative courses including improvisation, composition and choreography.
The curriculum of the Dance and Choreography programme at Virginia Commonwealth University includes courses in dance history, music, anatomy, dance science and teaching methods. Electives offered in the programme include West African dance, jazz, tap, hip-hop, contact improvisation, video choreography, business of dance and children’s pedagogy.
The Department of Dance and Choreography also offers a BFA programme with a ballet performance concentration in which students work as a trainee with the Richmond Ballet.
Student learning outcomes
Upon completing this programme, students will know and know how to do the following:
- Students should achieve proficiency in improvisation, composition, choreography and related art forms that encourage creativity and an individual point of view.
- Students should become proficient in modern dance technique and performance and a diverse range of other dance techniques in order to maximize their potential to become versatile dancers of technical excellence.
- Students should demonstrate a global and historical perspective of dance as an art form, with an emphasis on diverse contemporary approaches to dance making, research and performance.
- Students should demonstrate writing and critical-thinking skills.
- Students should demonstrate comprehensive and theoretical understanding of the field of dance.

- Admission to a VCU undergraduate degree programme requires graduation from a secondary school or the equivalent (lyceum, senior middle school, university preparatory school, completion of GCSE exams, Standard 12 graduation, etc.), which typically consists of at least 12 years beyond kindergarten.
- Dance applicants are required to audition in person or virtually and interview with faculty.
- Talent and potential as an artist in the field of dance.
- Prior training and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of modern dance and/or classical ballet techniques.
- Ability to demonstrate musicality and dynamic range.
- A healthy, physically conditioned body that is injury-free.
