VCUarts Cinema is one of only 20 American film schools recognized by CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools. Unlike other top film schools, your tuition also covers all of your filmmaking expenses, from equipment rental to film development.

In the Cinema programme at Virginia Commonwealth University you will shoot on location with auditioned actors, following industry practices and using professional equipment. Graduates have been accepted into MFA programmes at NYU, FSU, Columbia and The New School, and have worked on numerous productions around the region and beyond, including films such as Harriet, Boy Erased and Loving, and television shows such as Insecure, Homeland, The Walking Dead and High Maintenance.

Admission to a VCU undergraduate degree programme requires graduation from a secondary school or the equivalent (lyceum, senior middle school, university preparatory school, completion of GCSE exams, Standard 12 graduation, etc.), which typically consists of at least 12 years beyond kindergarten.

Cinema essay - In 300–600 words, tell us how you approach creative responsibility and collaboration.

Portfolio - Submit a portfolio of your creative work. You’re welcome to include a mix of mediums — short films, photography, painting, music, etc. Choose work that shows us who you are as a creator and best reflects your voice and point of view! Submit up to 5 total pieces. If you’re including video or music, keep the total combined length under 10 minutes. If you don’t have a full portfolio yet, that’s okay! You can instead send a 60-second video of yourself pitching an idea for a movie you’d like to make one day.
