There is no typical job for a history major. The History graduates at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee can be found in all types of companies and in all types of roles, as well as graduate programs in history and other related humanities and social science fields. A student’s career choices after college are often guided by how they applied their coursework to real-world applications during college. Internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer experiences will help a student network during college and shape their career choices after graduation. The possibilities are numerous, and all students are encouraged to gain practical experience that complements the major.

At UWM, undergraduates can work on research projects such as the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee. The opportunity to participate in research as an undergraduate is a distinct advantage for UWM students. At most large research universities, research opportunities for undergraduates are limited; there are fewer of them, and they often are reserved for juniors or seniors. At UWM, you can become involved as early as freshman year. Students work directly with faculty and graduate students on their current research projects, and they sometimes find themselves published in a peer-reviewed journal right alongside the faculty member. Participating in undergraduate research is an excellent way to enhance your resume for graduate school or employment.

The training you get as a history major is the perfect foundation for any career. Critical thinking, research, and writing — the kinds of skills our major gives you — are all in high demand across a wide range of professions. More importantly, students who have learned to critically analyze the past gain a more empowered relationship to the world around us in the present. When you understand the origins of current problems, conflicts, and structures, you gain insight into how we could transform the present and begin to build better futures. Historical training provides you with skills that cannot be replaced by automation and artificial intelligence, but it also fosters empathy, helping you to build a career that is meaningful and creative.

Our majors are well-represented in fields you might expect for a history major such as museums, libraries and archives, law firms, government agencies, and education. But they are also entrepreneurs, politicians, non-profit and charitable organization leaders, businessmen and -women, and investment professionals. Whatever profession you find, majoring in history will prepare you for a changing world with skills that never become obsolete.

The bachelor’s application requirements include uploaded copies of transcripts and degree certificates. Applicants should upload copies into their application online.

Admitted students will be required to provide the original documents to upon arrival to campus. There is no need to mail anything directly to UWM during the application process.
