Key features

Through a combination of academic coursework and hands-on experience, you will graduate with the critical thinking skills, pedagogical knowledge, and human understanding you need to be an effective educator to those with unique education needs. The Special Education program curriculum at the University of Utah consists of a Teacher Education Core, with classes in the following topics: early childhood education, secondary classroom education, assessment and instruction principles, language development, legal and policy foundations, reading methods, writing instruction, math instruction, and classroom technology integration. Students then complete courses and practicums relevant to their emphasis area, with the academic experience culminating in a period of student teaching. Students who successfully complete the program are recommended for licensure to the Utah State Office of Education; once licensure is granted, students may become teachers in the state of Utah. The program offers five areas of emphasis:

Mild/Moderate Disabilities

Severe Disabilities

Visual Impairment

The Student Experience

If you want to enrich your studies, consider completing an undergraduate research project or learning abroad experience. Students who want to get involved on campus have a number of opportunities to do so: consider joining the Education & Advocacy Bennion Center Group, the Student Council for Exceptional Children at the U of U, or the Special Education Student Advisory Committee.The Urban Institute for Teacher Educationhosts outreach events to students and the community, and both the Utah Multi-University Consortium Teacher Preparation Program andthe Utah Education Network offer resources that will help you in your career as an educator.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the program who have received their licensure to teach may become special education teachers at the preschool, elementary, middle school, or high school level. Remain in Utah and work in a school system here, or move to another state to practice your special education skills in a new environment and community. For students who complete graduate programs, careers as administrators, principals, professors, counselors, or advisors are also possible.
