Overview

African and African Diaspora Studies examines cultures, societies and political economies of peoples of African origin and descent. This includes not just peoples of the African continent but everyone with African roots around the globe, often referred to as the African diaspora. The study of African and African Diaspora Studies is relevant to everyone, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, nationality or religion.

Through coursework in history, literature, political science, economics, and more, students in the African and African Diaspora Studies program at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee will examine a variety of issues and themes through an African-centric lens. Along the way, they will be honing their skills in communication, information analysis, and research - all skills cited by employers as critically important in their hiring process.

Career

African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) is relevant to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexuality, or gender. Students learn to view complex situations from multiple perspectives; synthesize known information and hypothesize about the unknown; apply lessons from the past to problems of the present, and critique current and past practices.

In doing so, the African and African Diaspora Studies major and minor prepare students for a wide range of careers and equips them with skills desired in many professional arenas: critical thinking, oral and written communication, problem-solving, research, and leadership.

The bachelor’s application requirements include uploaded copies of transcripts and degree certificates. Applicants should upload copies into their application online.

Admitted students will be required to provide the original documents to upon arrival to campus. There is no need to mail anything directly to UWM during the application process.
