Duke University helps students acquire German language skills, regardless of their level of entry. Students learn how to understand, read, speak, write, and indeed how to think in German.

The university is committed to the idea that language acquisition is not merely a skill, but is deeply connected to how we experience and understand other cultures and societies. Learning another language, in turn, changes how we perceive our own.

Broadly put, this is the goal of the German program with respect to language-teaching: for students to understand and experience how inhabiting a foreign language can open up new realms of thought and meaning, in both academic and personal contexts.

In Europe, more people speak German as their native language than English, French, or Spanish.

Germany is Europe’s largest economy, one of the world’s biggest exporters, and plays a major political role in the European Union. It is also a leader in environmentalism and renewable energy.

Germany has a tremendously rich cultural heritage and German, Austrian, and Swiss-German composers, philosophers, and authors have changed the way we think and live. German is the language of Goethe and Kafka, as well as Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler.

German is an excellent language to learn in preparation for professional careers in international business or law, engineering, government and international affairs, economics and finance, and education, as well as for academic careers in such fields as history, religion, philosophy, art history, political science, literature, and music.

Duke will consider official scores as well as scores that are self-reported on the application. Submitting essay scores from the ACT and/or SAT is optional.

If you are a non-native English speaker or if you are not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends but do not require that you take an English proficiency test.

Duke requires three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses (English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, foreign languages), preferably within the last two years of secondary school.

Both the Common Application and the Coalition Application include a one-page personal essay as well as short essay questions specific to Duke.
