Overview

After gaining an understanding of the basic issues of Middle Eastern history and societies, students may enroll in a wide range of upper-level courses offered throughout the Five Colleges. Fluency in a major Middle Eastern language, usually Arabic, is achieved through language classes in and outside of the Department.

Students are also encouraged to study abroad in order to intensify the connection to Middle Eastern culture, language and society.

The Middle Eastern Studies program of the University of Massachusetts Amherst allows students to acquire useful skills needed for diverse academic and professional opportunities after graduation. Many of our students have gone on to leading graduate programs, have won prestigious fellowships such as the Fulbright, and have found jobs in teaching, journalism, international relations, business, and non-profit organizations.

Careers

A major in Middle Eastern Studies offers excellent preparation for professional training programs requiring an undergraduate liberal arts education.

Many of our majors have plans for a career that is directly related to Middle Eastern Studies, such as public policy, government service, finance, intelligence, and law.

The major also prepares students for an advanced graduate degree in preparation for an academic career. The program has produced several Fulbright fellowship awardees. Alumni who have majored in Middle Eastern Studies have gone to graduate schools such as Harvard University, Georgetown University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the American University in Beirut.
