Overview
All courses, including laboratories, are taught by faculty members, and we strive to provide a significant amount of personalized interactions with our students. Alumni of the department include university professors, research scientists, physicians, lawyers, dentists, executives, directors of research, secondary school teachers, and administrators. We never know where we'll find one of our majors - the study of chemistry opens many doors.
Also, many students at the College of William & Mary who are not Chemistry majors need chemistry courses for their studies. We help support the biology, geology, physics, environmental science and biochemistry programs.
Undergraduate Research
We encourage all chemistry students to become involved with research. The benefits are many:
- development of skills associated with working in the chemical literature
- development of advanced laboratory skills and methods of data archival and analysis
- increased interactions with your peers and faculty within the department
- greater exposure to state-of-the art instrumentation used in chemical research
- easier transition to graduate study or employment
- flexible scheduling of research time (as opposed to structured teaching labs)
- increased self-confidence and independence in laboratory research
- development of written and oral communication skills
