Why Study Electrical or Computer Engineering?

If you major in the Computer Engineering program of Vanderbilt University, you can expect to line up a rewarding job well before you step off the graduation stage. EE is the backbone discipline of today’s technological explosion, from the development of microelectronics and robotics, to the embedded computer systems found in household appliances, automobiles, as well as spacecraft and satellite equipment. Increasingly, it is also the source for innovative solutions to challenges in energy and healthcare.

Career Opportunities

Your ABET accredited undergraduate degree in electrical engineering will prepare you for a wide range of jobs with major industries, government, or private consulting companies. You might specialize in microelectronics, signals and systems, or computer engineering. Or you might decide to focus on embedded computing, in which computers interface with machinery and other physical systems (such as cars and appliances) for better control. Other popular fields for electrical engineers are intelligent robotics and medical image processing.

Or, if you decide to pursue an advanced engineering degree, you’ll get the support and encouragement you need. The department offers master of engineering, master of science, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering. You might be particularly interested in the department’s major strength areas: embedded computing, intelligent systems, medical image processing, nanotechnology, or radiation effects and reliability in semiconductor devices. The curriculum can be arranged to achieve both the bachelor and master degrees within five years.

If you decide to obtain a law degree or a master in business, your undergrad EE degree provides excellent preparation and a competitive advantage.
