The Art Education major at Boston University provides students with the opportunity to become skilled artists as well as to prepare for teaching art in pre-K–12 settings. Studio, education, and liberal arts courses are required study.

In addition to the academic requirements, students at Boston University are required to complete fieldwork observations in art classes in area schools. At the end of the program, students are eligible to obtain two initial visual arts teaching licenses from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education—one for secondary and one for primary. This requires two 300-hour practicums in the field with an Art Education department–approved mentor.
