The Public Policy program offered by Brown University is designed to provide students with the critical capacities, analytical tools, and collaborative dispositions to be effective and ethical policy analysts and change agents in governments, firms, and non-profit organizations.

A broad understanding of major policy issues in a number of substantive domains (e.g. Health, Education, Social Welfare, Criminal Justice, and Environmental Protection), as well as deeper knowledge of the most important policy issues in a particular domai

A basic understanding of how laws, institutions, and budgets shape the policy process, from formation through implementation and evaluation

The critical skills necessary to examine how the framing and communication of social problems structure the analysis, formation, implementation, and evaluation of public policies

An appreciation of the ethical foundations of public engagement, from basic conflicts of interest to both the obvious and less visible challenges that competing values – including one’s own - pose for the policy process

Command of a toolkit of analytical, institutional, and communicative skills, discussed in greater detail on the public policy website

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students who matriculate. Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study, with certified English translations.

Three letters of recommendation by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant's potential for graduate study. All letters should comment on an applicant’s ability to do research and perform in the program’s required coursework.
