The Classical Studies program of Virginia Tech focuses on the languages and cultures of ancient Rome and Greece. There are two components to the major: classical studies and classical languages.

Courses of the Classical Studies program of Virginia Tech include mythology, history, art, literature, religion including biblical studies, philosophy, modern uses of the classical past, and archaeology. The languages courses involve the study of Latin and ancient Greek. 

Virginia Tech is an excellent place to study classics and our flexibility allows you to shape the major to fit a variety of goals. There are many study abroad opportunities for students like the VT in Rome and Switzerland program. Students can also study abroad at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, as well as embark on archaeological digs in Cyprus, Italy, Bulgaria, and Romania.

Programme Structure

  • To complete the interdisciplinary major in Classical Studies, a student must complete 36 hours: 18 in Classical Studies (History, Art & Art History, Mythology, Literature, Culture, Religion, etc.) and 18 hours in Classical Languages (Ancient Greek and/or Latin). Variable-content courses may be repeated for credit.

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

    PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. Delivered and marked by computer, it reports on a scale between 10 and 90.
