About

The Sociology department was founded in 1915 by Emory S. Bogardus, the first of 15 who have served as chairs of the University of Southern California Sociology department. USC Sociology played an important role in the history of the discipline: it was the first sociology department west of the Mississippi to offer the Ph.D. degree in 1928;

Overview

The greater Los Angeles area provides a natural laboratory for students to explore such sociological themes as race relations, work and workplace, immigration, the family in a changing society, population trends, globalization, religion, and the criminal justice system. Many of our undergraduate courses include opportunities to engage with the community and pursue independent research.The Sociology program is offered at University of Southern California.

Accreditation

USC is accredited by the Senior College and University Commission (WASC Senior or WSCUC) of the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC).

The WASC accreditation process aids institutions in developing and sustaining effective educational programs and assures the educational community, the general public, and other organizations that an accredited institution has met high standards of quality and effectiveness. The Commission accredits institutions, not individual programs.
