About

History

Though plans for a university in York first appeared as early as 1617, it would be over three centuries before they came to fruition. In 1960, permission was finally granted for the University of York to be built, marking the beginning of our journey.

Housing services

Moving to another country can be a daunting prospect, but with all of our accommodation located on or very near to our compact and safe campus, you’ll soon feel at home in York.

The University offer a range of self-catered and catered accommodation options with ensuite and shared bathrooms available.

Library services

You can visit the Libraries to borrow and return items, or use the printers, without a booking. To study in the Library you do need to reserve a study space, and all the information on how to do this is below.

Medical services

Healthcare is provided by your doctor, the NHS urgent care centre at York District Hospital and various chemists, dentists and opticians in York.

Student Life

Campus life

Major improvements of the existing Heslington campus include the refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library and the construction of the Berrick Saul and Centre for Immunology and Infection buildings.

Campus East is the name of the University's expansion. The site is consists of 117 hectares of land close to the current campus on the outskirts of York. The development of the site will include academic buildings, college accommodation, sporting facilities and community facilities.

Sports facilities

        York Sport Village boasts a fantastic array of modern facilities, perfect for school sports days, birthday parties, corporate away-days, training and more.

  • Fully floodlit competition size outdoor 3G football pitch
  • Three outdoor floodlit 3G five-a-side pitches

Student clubs

University of York  is one of only a few universities in the UK to have an independent student-led organisation specifically for postgraduates. When you arrive at York as a postgraduate you will automatically become a member.The GSA is led by a team of elected officers who are all York students or recent graduates. They're here to help you make the most of your time at York.

PBL is great. The facilities are amazing. Most teachers are pretty good. Only thing that could be better is the university response to pandemics and strikes which have been a constant issue.

The professors are knowledgeable and always have time for any queries. There is a wealth of extracurricular opportunities and they help to relieve stress and focus attention on the degree.

Despite the courses and modules being some of the most interesting and engaging I've ever taken at university, the assessments were an incredible strain on my physical and mental wellbeing. Rather than having the holiday to complete them, four assessments were due at the end of each term, which in words could be between 8,000-10,000, before the modules had even finished....
