History
- Lander University was founded as a college for women by Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872, as Williamston Female College in Williamston, South Carolina. It remained a private institution for 26 years.
- In 1898, the college gained the support of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
Education
More than 60 areas of undergraduate study are offered, as well as a diverse selection of (Master's degree |master's programs). Three programs are offered completely online: the R.N. to B.S.N. completion option, the criminal justice management bachelor’s degree, and the health care management certificate.
Research
Research assistance to users is available through drop-ins, over the phone, by email, or by appointment. For drop-ins, outside of scheduled reference consultations librarians are available for assistance 45 hours per week, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. For more in-depth questions, reference consultations can be scheduled with the professional librarians for one on one assistance with research needs through our Reserve a Librarian form.

The Office of Counseling Services provides personal counseling for students who need help with overcoming and working through mental health problems. Counseling sessions are free to the student and are confidential. Sessions are tailored to accommodate each student’s needs.
Housing services
- As Lander continues to expand, our Housing and Residence Life team is excited that you will be joining us on campus, and are thrilled about new initiatives that you will be a part of.
- Lander University’s on-campus housing options include 10 different living communities located on-campus and in close proximity to campus. Over 1,750 students call our residential communities home making on-campus living a lively hub for campus life.
Library services
Library services promises the following provisions to the students, faculty and staff of Lander:
- Expert instructional guidance for building skills in information literacy and successful research;
- The best available content in both print and electronic formats;
- Attractive and comfortable physical spaces that are conducive to study and research for individuals and groups;
ICT services
Technical support for computer and network related problems is available during normal business hours which are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The ITS Help Desk is located in the Computer Commons on the Lower Level of Jackson Library.
Medical services
The Office of Health Services provides a registered nurse who is on-duty for routine nursing treatments during these hours. A Campus Nurse is available during office hours when school is in session. Students who have a health concern, become sick or injured, should come to the Wellness Center for evaluation and/or treatment during office hours.
Campus life
Lander University is situated on a wooded site of approximately 128 acres in Greenwood, S.C. When the college entered the state system in 1973, the Board of Trustees placed high priority on creating a master plan for future campus development. Recent campus improvements include extensive renovations to a number of academic and administrative facilities, and construction of new housing complexes, athletic fields and parking areas.
Sports facilities
The Wellness Center offers a variety of health care services, programs and information resources to help students maintain optimal emotional and physical health. The Wellness Center is located in Genesis hall next to the Lander University Police and is comprised of Student Health Services and Counseling Services.
Student clubs
We believe students should have opportunities to learn and grow inside and outside the classroom. In addition to meeting new people and having fun, getting involved in one of our more than 60 student clubs and organizations is a great way to develop and sharpen valuable career skills, including teamwork, time management and organization.
Lander is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's and master's level degrees.
