Indiana University offered its first extension class in South Bend during the spring semester of 1916. There were occasional classes from 1922 onward, but an organized extension program began in 1933. Higher education was largely for children of families which could afford the cost of tuition, room and board at a residential college far from home.

The campus of IU South Bend borders the St. Joseph River and, like the river, IU South Bend is a focal point for the region. Nearly a dozen north central Indiana and southwestern Michigan counties within a 50-mile radius look to the campus for academic and professional programs and for community services. Academic partnerships are in place with Ivy Tech Community College and other area community colleges to ensure smooth transitions between the two-year institutions and IU South Bend.
The Sports Information Director is responsible for the marketing and promotion of Indiana University South Bend varsity athletics. IU South Bend is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The HLC reviews colleges and universities every 10 years to ensure that they continue to meet the criteria for accreditation through a peer review process. Accreditation affects many aspects of the university, including financial aid eligibility, course transfers, and the overall value of a degree. IU South Bend will be reviewed for reaffirmation of accreditation during the Fall semester of 2017.
On February 24, 2012, the Commission Board of Trustees adopted new Criteria for Accreditation, Assumed Practices, and Obligations of Affiliation. They are effective for all institutions as of January 1, 2013.
