Overview
The University of Maine 's Department of Art’s BA programme in Art History focuses on the critical study of artworks, material objects, and visual cultures. Our faculty encourages interdisciplinary inquiry into historically and culturally diverse forms of art and visual thinking. By emphasizing comprehensive research and critical writing skills, the degree prepares students for graduate studies and professional success in a number of fields. The Art History degree also expands cultural and historical perspectives, preparing students to contribute to our always-diversifying world
Learning Outcomes
1) Knowledge of the Canon: students draw knowledgeably from the periods and artworks of the historical canon in discussions, presentations, and research papers.
2) Research Proficiency: students locate, interpret, and critique appropriate primary and secondary sources in research databases, library catalogs, museum and gallery records, and archives.
3) Writing Competency: students articulate ideas clearly, demonstrate effective rhetorical persuasiveness, and synthesize claims and evidence from primary and secondary sources with their own arguments.

- Complete one of our applications – the Common Application, the UMaine Mobile Application or the ApplyMaine Application.
- Submit transcripts of all previous secondary/high school or university work (submission requirements by country). In addition, if the document is not in English, submit a certified English translation.
- We can accept copies of transcripts and test scores submitted by the student to internationaladm@maine.edu. Once admitted, the student will be required to submit official documents to our office before class registration is possible.
