Key facts
You will master the skills needed to encourage students to learn new material and to take responsibility for themselves and one another. As you work toward the B.S. in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) at Long Island University (LIU) will gain an understanding and appreciation of subjects ranging from science to music to language arts.
You also will acquire techniques to assess and evaluate a child’s intellectual, social and physical development and learn the basic principles of classroom management for a diverse student population.
The program will culminate in a semester-long student teaching experience that will allow you to practice your new skills in a classroom setting. This degree qualifies you for New York State Initial Teaching Certification.

General requirements
Admission Requirements:
- Incoming freshmen must have a solid B average (3.0 or 82-85 grade point average) and an average SAT of 1000 (Critical Reading and Math combined) or ACT Composite of 20 or above.
- Transfer students must have completed more than 24 college credits. A minimum college G.P.A. of 2.0 is required for application review. If you have completed fewer than 24 credits, you must also submit high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores.
