Key Features

The Department of Counseling, Quantitative Methods, & Special Education, offers an undergraduate major in special education, which entitles the student to qualify for the State of Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with the Learning Behavior Specialist I endorsement. Our Special Education -Learning Behavior Specialist I program is fully approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. It is also nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) meeting the professional teacher standards for the preparation of special educators. The Special Education program also prepares students to work with infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays and coursework toward the Early Childhood Special Education approval.

The Special Education major at Southern Illinois University provides students with valuable active learning opportunities, integrating courses and field-based experiences that equip them with the skills to be successful professionals in the future. The undergraduate program reflects the faculty’s strong commitment to addressing students’ educational interests, developing personal relationships and providing a supportive learning environment. Choose from our more than 200 undergraduate programs (Majors) in eight different colleges. Determine if you meet our minimum requirements to a Bachelor's (undergraduate) program for:
