Overview
During the first two years, the Civil Engineering course offered at The University of Manchester is broad-based and covers topics such as structural analysis, hydraulics, geotechnics, construction materials, engineering design, project management and mathematics.
In the final year, you will undertake an individual research project and have options to study emerging subjects crucial to the future of society such as renewable energy systems and resource efficiency and management.
This degree will equip you to enter the civil engineering professions, and fully satisfies the educational base for becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), while partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Our Civil Engineering graduates are regularly recruited by well-known engineering consultancies and organisations such as Arup, Atkins, Aecom, BuroHappold, Mott McDonald, Network Rail, amongst others. Many of our graduates embark upon professional careers in the built environment sector, but other career paths include project management and finance

A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.

General requirements
A-level
- AAA including Mathematics, Physics, and one other subject.
- Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education, typically five GCSEs/IGCSEs, including acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C/4 in GCSE/IGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language.
International Baccalaureate
- 36 points overall with 6,6,6 at Higher Level, including Mathematics, Physics, and one other subject. We accept Mathematics: analysis and approaches or Mathematics: applications and interpretation.
