Overview

The campus is located just a few kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, and so its diverse marine habitats -- bays, estuaries, beaches, rocky intertidal, open water -- are easily accessible even for short fieldtrips.

Students in the Marine Biology programme at California State University Long Beach get extensive experience in field work as well as in the study of marine organisms and marine biological processes in the laboratory. Other programme emphases include training in data analysis and scientific writing, key skills for career advancement.

Faculty in the marine biology programme are active researchers in the field, with particular emphases in the areas of aquatic toxicology, developmental and larval biology, physiological, behavioral, population, and community ecology, and evolution. There are many opportunities for undergraduates to work directly with faculty to carry out and publish original, cutting-edge research in marine biology.

Professional Development Series

To help prepare CSULB students for careers in marine science, each year the marine biology faculty offer a series of workshops designed specifically for marine biology majors. Each semester, students have multiple opportunities to meet informally with faculty, graduate students, alumni, and other noted professionals in the field of marine biology to enhance and promote their professional development. Workshop topics include:

internships: what is available, and why you should do one

scholarships and grants: what is available, and how to apply for them

how to develop a curriculum vitae

how to gain the academic and practical experience needed to land a job

File a CSULB application through Cal State Apply by the deadline

Have earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or "B'" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.

Fulfil CSULB's English Language Requirement

Have completed at least 1 year of high school mathematics. Applicants to STEM majors must have at least 3 years of high school mathematics.

Provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for at least 2 "A/AS" subjects completed.
