Overview
This degree programme offers you the opportunity to study the two related disciplines of physiology and pharmacology. In the physiological aspects of the course, you will gain a firm understanding of the range of processes happening in the various tissues and organs of the human body, how these are altered in response to external and internal stimuli, and how these go wrong in disease states.
Key facts
- The pharmacology aspects will focus on how drugs act on the human body and how they can be used as medications to restore normal physiology. You’ll be provided with a comprehensive introduction to basic bioscience and develop essential laboratory and study skills.
- You’ll also undertake advanced physiology and pharmacology learning where you will be introduced to altered human physiology in disease (pathophysiology) and begin to understand the actions of common drugs that are used to treat these states.
- It is the perfect route if you want a career in the pharmaceutical industry – drug testing, drug research, drug design and development, lab work or other bioscience based careers.
- As a graduate from this Physiology and Pharmacology (Hons) programme from The University of Lancashire you can go on to follow careers within industrial settings (eg drug design and development, quality assurance, coordinating clinical trials). You could also pursue research careers in physiology-related areas after a period of postgraduate study (PhDs, undertaken both here and in other universities).
