The interdisciplinary nature of the Latin American, Caribbean, and LatinX Studies program at University of Rochester introduces students to a wide range of methodologies and spans the region’s geographic diversity, providing a rich set of coursework toward cultural competency and global citizenship.

About the program

Students take courses across disciplines in recognition that the region’s complicated challenges and diverse societies require complex solutions and a holistic, rather than singular, approach.

The major’s core courses and structure require students to integrate knowledge across disciplines. Students are encouraged to incorporate experiential learning, like study abroad, internships, and community-engaged coursework, into their studies.

The programs require students to complete intermediate Spanish or Portuguese. Students can also petition to include other relevant language study. This provides students with the necessary language skills to engage with many LACX societies.

LACX cultivates creative thinking that will leave students poised to imagine and enact effective change in careers and research ranging from public health and medicine to diplomacy, sustainability, education, and social justice.
