Overview

Students in the Biology - Ecology track at Saint Leo University can count on “learning by doing”. Students learn about the environment by spending time in the environment. Whether classes consist of canoing on Saint Leo’s own Lake Jovita, hiking and conducting research in nearby parks and wildlife preserves, or on the water studying marine life, faculty know how to use the outdoors as a classroom.

Saint Leo science students have studied in Peru, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, Costa Rica, and Panama. Future field-trips with Saint Leo faculty may also include Belize, the Pacific Northwest, the Caribbean, and South America.

Students also have the opportunity to engage in undergraduate research projects with faculty members. Recent examples of undergraduate research projects include oyster reef restoration, mangrove monitoring, and rain forest assessment. Participation in real-world research fosters deeper understanding of science and hones problem-solving skills in a way that no classroom activity can.

Applicants for regular admission are recommended to have completed specified high school courses prior to enrollment

Advanced placement (ap) credit awarded for scores of 3 or higher for select exams; maximum standardized examination transfer credit is 40 semester hours

International baccalaureate (ib) diploma holders may be considered for admission as sophomores; ib diploma may yield 30 semester hours for hl/sl scores of 5\–7 (hl score of 4 considered case-by-case); non-diploma hl scores of 5\–7 may receive six semester hours on a case-by-case basis
