Overview

The British Sign Language and Deaf Studies (with Foundation Year) programme from The University of Lancashire will prepare you for degree-level study. You'll gain skills in academic writing, referencing and critical thinking. You'll also complete groupwork, to improve your communication and teamwork.

You will continue to develop your language skills. This includes different strategies to learn languages. You'll reflect on your own abilities and identify areas for improvements. You'll also look at area studies, which will raise your cultural awareness.

What you'll do

You'll develop your academic and language skills to prepare you to study at degree level.

You'll explore the language learning process, reflecting on your own experience and applying new methods of learning.

You’ll be taught by a mixed deaf and hearing team who are experts in a range of topics including linguistics, translation studies, community and history.

Future careers

British Sign Language and Deaf Studies course with a foundation year could lead to a variety of careers and professions, including: lecturers, teachers, BSL/English interpreters, social workers, educational support workers, or working with the media or the police.

Graduates have also moved on to higher degrees and research, as well as running their own businesses.
