The Greatest Commitment to Critical Thought

You’ll be challenged to ask critical questions about those philosophical ideas. You’ll examine and debate the history, development, and grounding principles of Western civilization and culture. And you’ll formulate answers to the unanswerable: what is scientific explanation? What constitutes knowledge and what are the criteria of knowledge? And at the heart of it all, what is the meaning of life? Philosophy from Hillsdale College is offered as both a major and minor.

The philosophy curriculum presents students with historical and contemporary opportunities to think critically and reflectively about fundamental questions of knowledge and value. The study of such philosophical problems in a spirit of free inquiry encourages students to think clearly and critically and to examine and develop their own views.

In addition to class offerings, students have the opportunity to learn from notable philosophers brought to campus through the Visiting Philosopher Series.
