Overview

During the Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Linguistics from New York University students are required to take five 4-point courses (20 points) each from the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Linguistics, and a grade of at least C is required in every course to be counted toward the joint major.

Joint anthropology-linguistics majors should also consult with Professor Sonia Das in the Department of Anthropology and the DUS in the Department of Linguistics for aid in developing their programme of study.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of programme requirements, students are expected to have developed:

An understanding of anthropological and linguistic approaches to the study of language and its role in society.

Knowledge of the methods that anthropologists and linguists use to study language and speech and their cultural context.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

The ability to conduct independent research based on library research and field techniques.

Standardized test scores (see NYU’s standardized testing requirements). Standardized testing is optional for the upcoming application term.

A Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants will be invited to complete this after submitting their application.

English language testing if you have not completed at least 3 years of study where English is the sole language of instruction at the time of application submission and English is not your first language.

Records of all college work that you have received academic credit for and does not appear on your high school transcript.

The Common Application Mid Year Report with updated academic record if mid-year grades are available. This should show your first semester senior year grades.
