Overview
The Human Rights program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham combines lessons in multiple disciplines such as ethics, political science, anthropology, and philosophy for a multi-faceted approach to human rights and the pursuit of justice.
Key Features
This program offers the unique opportunity to study civil rights through the lens of Birmingham’s own significant history in the Civil Rights Movement.
Furthermore, you can study many areas of human rights advocacy—including social, political, educational, and health—while also developing skills in research, critical thinking, and analysis, which can translate to various career fields.
Finally, choose between either a research-focused capstone project or an internship with on-campus and off-campus opportunities to apply your human rights education in a professional work environment.
Career
A degree in human rights opens career options in a variety of fields. Our students’ ability and passion to view societal concerns from a human rights lens and address issues of major social concern naturally guide them to careers in the public and non-profit sectors; however, they also learn skills that are applicable in the private sector (e.g. critical thinking, quantitative and qualitative literacy, and facilitating conversations on controversial topics).
As human rights touches upon multiple dimensions of the human experience, including social and political rights – as well as educational, health, and economic opportunities – this field of study can be very beneficial to careers in many fields.
Career opportunities for HRT students include (but are not limited to) the following sectors:
- Public Administration
