This degree program is designed to provide students with the background necessary to continue their education at the graduate level or to pursue a career related to the particular area.

The Molecular Biology program at University of South Carolina Aiken prepares students for graduate and professional school, and is the core coursework for the Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.

During the first year Get acquainted with the biology faculty. Year two is a good time to take a foreign language and if you have not already done so, investigate opportunities to work in a research lab. Speak with your professors, fellow students, and your advisor keeping in mind that independent research is an important part of the Molecular Biology concentration.

The third year might entail taking on a more complicated project and getting involved with more advanced aspects of research (e.g., data analyses). This would also be a good time to consider planning an independent project for your senior year.

During last year you will dive into the deep end of biological research! This is your opportunity to conduct an independent research project based on your accumulated knowledge and skills. Formulate your own hypothesis, and design a study to test it scientifically. This will entail training younger students in the lab, supervising data collection, and collaborating with your mentor to create a product suitable for presentation at a professional conference. This is an excellent "warm-up" for students hoping to further their education in graduate school.
