The Russian programme offered by Saint Olaf College is the key to reading more than one-fourth of all the published scientific literature in the world.
Russia continues to be a major player in the global community in many different areas: politics, economics, space-age technology, and the development of new computer software.
Key facts
- The department offers a major in Russian Language as well as courses on Russian literature taught in English. Russian 231 or a higher numbered course taught in the Russian language, or demonstrated proficiency satisfies the foreign language requirement for all students.
- The literature courses in English count towards a major in Russian Area Studies and satisfy some General Education requirements.

- The Common Application or Coalition Application
- TOEFL (minimum score 90), Academic IELTS (minimum band 6.5), or Duolingo (minimum score of 120). This requirement will be waived automatically if English is your first language and/or your primary language of instruction.
- Optional: SAT or ACT scores. If you submit either of these test scores, we will accept self-reported test scores. Should you choose to enroll at St. Olaf, you will need to provide official test score reports from College Board, ACT, or on your official high school transcript.
- One teacher evaluation from an academic subject area.
- Secondary school transcripts or reports with progress grades (the last 3-4 years of schooling)
